An Insider's Guide to Eyelash Extensions

If you like the idea of instantly longer and thicker eyelashes, semi-permanent lash extensions (like celebrities wear) may be the solution for you. However, there are some things to consider when choosing them.

First, there are a number of different brands that offer lashes, but just how natural they will look depends on the Aesthetician applying them. Similar to how you would choose a plastic surgeon, you shouldn't blindly choose an Aesthetician. Ask to see photos of the lash professional's work since they'll need to have an aesthetic eye to achieve beautiful results.

There are two kinds to consider says Glad Lash Founder and Esthetician Esther Bolkin, synthetic lashes and mink lashes. Mink is softer and feels more luxurious, offering a very natural look. Synthetic lashes offer big drama and are sturdier than mink, says Bolkin.

It's also important to make sure you get single eyelash extensions—one synthetic lash for each natural lash as opposed to "bundles" which can cause breakage of your natural lash. Too much weight on one single lash is not only uncomfortable, but can damage your lashes.

If you want to add more drama to your eyelash extensions once applied, only use water-soluble mascara, however, constant use of mascara may shorten the lifespan of lashes. Whatever you do, don't use any waterproof varieties.

Finally, avoid thick eye creams and oil-based products like cleaners and makeup removers, and try not to sleep on your face as any pulling might tug your lashes out.

If you properly care for your extensions, they should last between two weeks and two months, depending on the brand.
