Make It Up Monday – What's in a Name? Cracking the Lipstick Naming Code

Cute Lipstick Names

Have you ever wondered how lipsticks get their cute names? We can all agree that the perfect lipstick shade can make or break a look or turn a just OK day into a take charge kind of day. So, I thought this would be a great topic to explore and in this article, I go over my thoughts and findings!

What's in a Name?

The lipstick name 'Pillow Talk' from Charlotte Tilbury gives the idea of seduction but also describes the sexy pout that you get when wearing it. This type of marketing makes us go wild! 'Ruby Woo' lipstick from MAC is a fun name and is marketed to give every skin tone the perfect red! Beauty enthusiasts are obsessed over this one. But how do these names get chosen for the final product?

How to Give the Perfect Name to a Lipstick

The naming of a beauty product involves giving it character. Connecting an emotion and story in a name elicits a reaction from the consumer that allures them to buy it. When looking at the beauty industry, it's apparent that names can also be inspired from music, movies, trends, artists, and celebrities, or chocolate. Yes, I said chocolate. Too Faced has a palette called Chocolate Bar because it’s infused with antioxidant-rich cocoa. Need I say more? Some people will just buy it because of that! Other beauty brands like Dior like to make names out of significant numbers with a back-story and makes the products fascinating to learn about.

A Name That Makes an Impact

Cosmetic marketing geniuses are on the pulse of what consumers are responding to and what is trending. I believe this is where most name inspiration comes from. I imagine groups of people brainstorming in an office creating magical names for that very lipstick shade you are wearing at this very moment. The same lipstick you said you must have because the name was too cute to pass up. The perfect name can make or break a lipstick's popularity or any beauty product for that matter. The common thread goes back to how will the name affect you. Will the name make you remember an amazing memory, song, or person in your life? Will it make you feel like everything will be OK or will it make you feel like nothing can stop you?! All the above is what's in a name. It's psychology.
